We’ve been shambling past the Lotzza Motzza pizza selection at our local grocery store for ages now. It often catches our eye, but we usually just glance at it for a moment before going for something we’ve had a million times instead.
It turns out, our desperate search for the familiar was the wrong decision. Lotzza Motzza pizzas are fantastic. Now that we’ve tasted them, we figure it’s time to give them the official Freezer Meal Frenzy welcome and do a proper review. We’re starting with the Lotzza Motzza Taco Grande Pizza.
Cooking one of these pizzas is not difficult. Simply preheat your oven to 400 degrees fahrenheit, put the pizza in, and let it cook for 18-23 minutes. We usually cook ours on a pizza pan (the instructions say to just toss the pizza directly on the oven rack), and we find 21 minutes to be the sweet spot. (If you want to read the full instructions straight from the sticker, check out our package scan at the very bottom of this review.)
Part of our pizza stuck to the pan a bit when it was cooking, so a bit of the edge broke off. You can see that in the photo above where it looks like someone took a bite out of the right side. That’s not a big deal, since we can always clean a pan, but we’d be a little nervous to cook that directly on the rack, as the instructions say to do. You could end up with a real mess on your hands!
Despite this little nibble quibble, this pizza is absolutely amazing, adding a southwest flair to your standard pizza pie. That mostly comes from the chorizo-style spices that are added to the ground beef. While this does have a tomato-based sauce, those spices make this whole thing taste more like a taco than a traditional pizza. We wouldn’t call this spicy, but we did find that our sinuses were flowing once we started chomping into this.
The toppings here are well-chosen to complement the south-of-the-border stylings of this tasty taco pie. You’ve got red onions, red peppers, olives, and ground beef. The beef is ground rather finely, and while we would have prefered some decadent, enormous meatballs, this stuff makes the pizza more taco-like, which is clearly a plus for frozen pizza with “Taco Grande” in the title.
The real kicker, though, is Lotzza Motzza’s insistence on adding ludicrous amounts of cheese. As huge fans of the perhaps-apocryphal Minnesota-style brew pup pizzas, we’ll never say no to extra cheese. This stuff is thick and gooey and oh-so-cheesy. It really is fantastic.
The only downside to this pizza is that it’s not healthy. Not even a little bit. If you manage to eat the recommended 1/5 of a pizza, you’re looking at 330 calories (140 from fat) and 720 mg of sodium. Up that to half a pizza (which is going to be a real temptation), and you’re now looking at 825 calories (350 from fat) and a whopping 1,800 mg of sodium. Wowzers!
The Lotzza Motzza Taco Grande Pizza is a wonderful take on pub-style pizza. This is definitely going to become one of our go-to cheat-day specialties. Just don’t indulge regularly, or you might find yourself packing on the pounds pretty quickly!
