This month, San Francisco received $650,000 in critical funding from the State of California that ensures the continuation of the city’s Be The Jury program, which increases juror pay from $15 to $100 a day for low- to moderate-income jurors. Assemblymember Phil Ting successfully championed the funding in Sacramento, and the San Francisco’s Treasurer’s Office, Public Defender’s Office, SF Bar Association, and District Attorney’s Office also advocated for it. This infusion of resources will fund San Francisco’s Be The Jury program for the 2024-2025 fiscal year. Local stakeholders will continue to advocate for permanent funding and statewide adoption of Be The Jury.
Mayor London N. Breed, Treasurer José Cisneros, and the San Francisco Human Services Agency together celebrate five years since the launch of San Francisco’s Museums for All program. Started in May 2019, the City’s Museums for All program began with the support of more than 15 museums and cultural institutions to provide free or significantly reduced admission to San Francisco residents who receive public benefits.
To date, the program has expanded and there are currently 28 participating museum partners.
Treasurer José Cisneros and City Attorney David Chiu issued statements today applauding the United States Supreme Court's decision in CFPB v. Community Financial Services Association of America, which ruled that the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s (CFPB) funding method is constitutional. The decision is a victory for the CFPB, as it ensures their ability to continue protecting consumers from predatory financial practices. This decision is also a win for U.S. consumers who benefit from the CFPB’s tireless work on their behalf. With this lawsuit, payday lenders blatantly attempted to strip away a critical source of protection so they could prey on vulnerable consumers unimpeded.
Today City leaders responded to the final business tax reform proposal issued by the Controller and the Treasurer, saying that the measure is the right proposal to support San Francisco’s long-term economic success in a post-COVID world.
In July 2023, Mayor London Breed, Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin, and Supervisor Rafael Mandelman asked then City Controller Ben Rosenfield and Treasurer José Cisneros to initiate a comprehensive process to propose reform of the City’s business tax structure. The goal was to convene the business community and other stakeholders to develop specific reform recommendations that could lead to a measure on the November 2024 ballot.
